I want to encourage you to do something similar. Whether you want to exercise more, eat healthier or live more fully, write down your intention and say it aloud everyday. Tell a good friend about it so you'll have support and be accountable. It's hard to keep an intention if you don't write it down or tell anyone. My intention for the holidays was to be healthy and I kept it by doing yoga daily and going on walks, plus eating sensibly. Due to the cold weather, my body craves more food and goes into hibernation mode, so I need to exercise now more than ever. It's easy to gain a few extra pounds, but it's much harder to lose weight. If you've overindulged during the holidays, don't beat yourself up. Just recommite yourself to eating healthier and moving more.

Ingrid Cheng
http://holistichealthco-op.org/Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-65179691277518913162008-12-16T21:54:00.000-08:002008-12-16T21:58:43.185-08:00Tips to Stay Healthy
1. An Apple a Day Really Works. A natural antioxidant called quercetin, found in red apples as well as broccoli and green tea, may give an immunity boost to individuals under stress.

2. Don't Worry, Conquer Stress. Stop worrying about getting sick. The fear and expectation of having something adverse happen actually lowers immunity, says Northrup.

3. Up Your Vitamin IntakeEverybody needs vitamin D, which can be found in foods like sockeye salmon, eggs, and milk. Citrus fruits are a good source of vitamin C andcan boost immunity.

4. Mind Over Body. A positive attitude can improve immunity, and increase circulation.

5. Just Say Om. Santa Monica, Calif., yoga therapist Felice Rhiannon (Former HHC member) credits her meditation and breathing practices for improving her physical and emotional health. "A calmer mind means a calmer body."

6. Increase Your Social Ties. Extroverts are less likely than introverts to get colds when exposed to a virus.

7. Accentuate the Positive. Cohen's research suggests that people who have a positive emotional style -- described as happy, enthusiastic, and calm -- are less likely to catch colds.

8. Wash Your Hands - Over and Over. According to the CDC, proper hand washing for 20 seconds is the most effective way to avoid the 1 billion colds that wecatch each year, not to mention other infectious diseases.

9. Get Your ZZZs - Sleep is one of the best ways to stay healthy.

From: http://www.tasteforlife.com/content/default.asp?artid=2000&title=Secrets_of_Super-Healthy_People

Ingrid Cheng

http://holistichealthco-op.org/

Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-51665297952469304452008-12-15T23:48:00.000-08:002008-12-15T23:52:37.708-08:00Healthy Holiday Party Tips1. Look for the mini-spinach pies and stuffed mushrooms. Thin, crispy sheets of phyllo are much lower in fat than heavy pie crusts and biscuit doughs. Mushrooms are also low-calorie carriers for savory fillings.
2. Cosy up to a hot drink. Hot cider is a delicious seasonal treat and you'll tend to drink hot, spiced drinks more slowly. Fewer refills means fewer calories.
3. Fill up on vegetables. Snack on fresh vegetables. A spot of dip is fine but don't overdo it.
4. Go for the protein. Lean protein will help curb your appetite for more dangerous fare.
5. Crack some nuts. Pick up the nutcracker and shell a couple of walnuts or almonds.
6. Have some candy. When the desserts come out, grab a candy cane (60 calories) or chocolate truffle (40 calories) to savor and take a pass on the cookies.

From: http://blog.nutritiondata.com/ndblog/2008/12/surviving-those.html?mbid=NDNLHolistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-67232255367779177552008-11-26T21:48:00.000-08:002008-11-26T22:05:02.868-08:00Choose to Exercise During the Holidays
Getting support is one of the most important things you can do when becoming more active. This week, choose at least two people that you can contact to help keep you accountable for reaching your physical activity goals. Write down their names, call them up and ask them for help. Then thank them for their support.

Find some time in your schedule when you can be active, even if it's only 10 minutes a day. Early mornings are the best for me since I get to move and exercise my body so I feel more awake and energized. I have established a 25-30 minute yoga routine that I do daily. If I miss a day, I feel a difference in my energy level and mood.

Most people drop out of physical activity because they try to do too much too soon. Take time to warm up and cool down. Go for a walk after lunch or dinner. It helps your body digest the food and relax. 75% of all doctor visits are stress related. Regular physical activity helps reduce stress and improve overall health. You should start by leisurely walking for about 5 minutes and increase your pace to a brisk walk. Slow down towards the end and cool down with some hamstring or legs stretches.

Adapted from "Choose to Move" email from http://heart.org/

Ingrid Cheng

http://holistichealthco-op.org/
Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-45417027627930076012008-11-18T21:22:00.000-08:002008-11-18T21:29:41.751-08:00Walking for HealthThe benefits of walking are that it helps:
1. Manage your weight. Walking burns calories, which can help you manage your weight.
2. Manage stress and boost your spirits. Going for a brisk walk is a great way to reduce stress. Regular walking also can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
3. Reduce your risk of a heart attack & type 2 diabetes.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/walking/HQ01612

I walk every day after dinner. I even go for short walks during lunch. I love walking because it helps me relax, feel good and have more energy. For an extra challenge, I walk uphill for 10-15 min. Then walk briskly on flat land for 15-20 min. I also take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Ingrid Cheng
http://holistichealthco-op.org/Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-6163350060431272992008-11-06T21:41:00.000-08:002008-11-07T15:58:40.684-08:006 Diet Tips For the Holidays
6 Easy Diet Tips just in time for the upcoming holidays:

1. Stop mindless eating: If you're eating out, order a salad with a light dressing or a broth-based soup, then share a main dish with a friend or ask for a container & put half of the portion in it before you eat since restaurant portions are bigger than what's healthy. If you're cooking dinner, a soup or salad is a great filler.

2. Trick your sweet tooth: Eat high quality protein or soy products at every meal. If you still crave something sweet, eat an apple for a snack. I make baked cinnamon apple slices as treats during winter. Sprinkle some cinnamon powder onto apple slices, place on aluminum foil lined tray and bake at 300 degrees for 2-3 min. Yum!

3. Check your waist size: If your "slim jeans" feel too tight, it's time to eat less & exercise more (go for a walk).

4. Write it down: Keep a food journal & write down what you eat each day during the holidays. You're less likely to overeat.

5. Fill up on foods with high fiber or water content like fruits & veggies. Avoid fried foods, rich sauces, full-fat dairy products, ham, sausages & red meat.

6. Tell a friend about your goal: Whether you just want to maintain your current weight or loss a few pounds, get support. Ask a buddy to keep you accountable.

Enjoy your holidays by eating healthily & sensibly.
Adapted from: http://www.parade.com/healthystyle/2008/11/6-easy-diet-tricks

Ingrid Cheng

http://holistichealthco-op.org/
Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-64424369567681669302008-11-05T16:14:00.000-08:002008-11-06T13:50:57.749-08:00Choose to MoveDuring the Choose To Move 12-week challenge, women will not only engage in physical activity, but discover a community of women who share a common goal – increase physical activity in order to develop a healthier lifestyle. The authors practice what they preach and offer ideas that make greening up celebrations fun and easy. There are many free and low cost ways to go green. I really like the alternatives to candy in the Halloween section and all the healthy recipes in the book. If we each do something that resonates with us, then we'll empower ourselves to practice the 3 Gs. Good for the people, good for the planet and good for the community. One thing that caught my attention is the fact that obesity costs $117 billion per year. People need to be informed and empowered to eat a healthy vegetable-based diet and exercise. This is the best prevention of obesity and other related diseases. One share goes into their own refrigerators, and they meet on a set day at the home of the host/ hostess to share their packaged food. So in exchange for cooking one meal, each person gets 5 meals—which, with leftovers, is often enough to provide dinner for the whole week.

From college campuses to apartment buildings, and from suburban neighborhoods to cohousing communities, many busy people have found that cooking cooperatively, especially for the after-work dinners on weeknights, can save time and money, and deepen connections with family and community—all while supporting healthy, green food choices. Though cooking co-op arrangements vary, they all take advantage of the fact that cooking one meal for a crowd, once a week is a "win-win" situation for all who are involved. All you have to do is to cook one big meal and portion it into 5 microwave-safe containers, keep one portion for yourself, then exchange your meal with others who do the same.

Modified from: http://www.coopamerica.org/pubs/realmoney/articles/cooperativemeals.cfm

Ingrid Cheng
Healthy Cook
http://holistichealthco-op.org/Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-71486207476616869572008-10-08T20:59:00.000-07:002008-10-11T08:19:48.384-07:00Chinese 5-ingredient Noodles
1 pack of Chinese noodles
1 chicken thigh (broiled and de-skinned)
2 eggs (beaten, cooked & sliced)
1/2 a head of cabbage (sliced)
2 cucumbers (sliced)
2-3 Shitake mushrooms (sliced)

2 Tbsp canola oil
2 tsp crushed garlic
1-2 tsp soy sauce
1-2 tsp red vinegar
1 tsp miso sauce
1 tsp Teriyaki sauce
sesame oil
garlic salt
salt
pepper

Boil water in a pan. Cooked tomatoes and tomato based pasta sauce contain more lycopen, a powerful antioxidant. An easy way is to bake tomatoes, then add them to salads, sandwiches and pastas. Roasted omega-3 rich fish like wild salmon tastes great and is good for us. Pair leafy greens with healthy fat like olive oil, nuts or avocado. This increases our absorption of disease-fighting compounds called cartenoids. Crushing garlic cloves activates the heart protecting compounds. Steaming broccoli or cauliflower can reduce cancer risk. (Modified from Cook Like Your Life Depends on It! by Sharon Palmer, RD).

When I cook, I get to be creative, to try out new recipes and new combination of ingredients. I know exactly what is in my food and can flavor it to my taste. I use fresh, healthy ingredients and save money as well as time since all my recipes take about 30 minutes and I save over $100 per month by eating at home.

Ingrid Cheng
Healthy Cook
http://holistichealthco-op.org/
http://healthycook.ning.com/Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-91831056727379777392008-10-01T20:48:00.000-07:002008-10-01T21:43:57.745-07:00Anti-Cancer RecipeBroccoli, Cauliflower, Potato Curry

1 onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 medium potatoes, cubed (3 to 4 cups)
1/2 head broccoli, cut into florets
1/2 head cauliflower, cut into florets
2 carrots, chopped
1 cup peas
1 can Garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
2 Tbsp Canola oil
1 1/2 Tbsp Curry powder
1/2 tsp Tumeric
1 can Coconut milk
3 Tbsp Soy sauce
1 tsp Sea salt

Saute onions, garlic, carrots & potatoes on oil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until onion begins to soften, about 3 min. Bush plunged the U.S. into an endless war with Iraq based on fear of non-existant weapons of mass destruction. Then, he denied that there was anything wrong with our economy just 5 months ago. Now, Bush wants us to be so fearful about a recession that we'll let him pull a $700 billion con-job on us, but when we focus on the negative things, we give power to them. Let's say and think 'President Obama' and experience the pleasure that this brings.

There is power in our intention! Saying what we wish to empower aligns us with what we want. Saying and imagining 'President Obama' is more likely to inspire actions that will create this wonderful outcome. When we're feeling good, instead of afraid, resigned or helpless, we will get a lot more done. Practice this to support you in feeling good and more resourceful.

From Celeste and Ingrid
www.AmericansforHope.org
http://holistichealthco-op.org/Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-83987087203032637172008-09-27T12:44:00.000-07:002008-09-27T18:28:39.468-07:00Ways to Reduce Risk of CancerWhat you need to know to lower your risk, find support and have healthy breasts for life.

1. Reduce or stop consumption of alcohol.
A recent study shows that just 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day may increase your risk of breast tumors by 32%. 3 or more drinks daily ups the odds by 51%.

2. Stop eating junk food.
Research shows that women with the highest levels of transfats have about twice the risk of breast cancer as those with the lowest levels. So, eat more fresh vegetables, produce and fruits.

3. Exercise*
I strongly believe that exercise is the best prevention of weight gain and essential to maintaining a healthy body, plus it's proven to improve your moods.

Links:
http://www.cancer.org
http://www.breastcancer.org/
http://komen.org

Source: Hope, Help and Lifesaving News by Gail O'Connor (modified by Ingrid Cheng)
http://holistichealthco-op.org/Holistic Health Consultanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04442036179790338090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808992134228361790.post-26981985234627523952008-09-26T08:30:00.000-07:002008-09-27T12:39:47.298-07:00We Want a Green Economy
Photo of Green Jobs Rally

Let the Presidential candidates know: We Want a Green Economy

Rally at the Federal Building 10-11:30 am.

RSVP at http://events.greenjobsnow.com/greenforall/events/show/5239

Urge elected officials to invest in creating millions of green jobs and a Clean Energy Corps. Innovation, real solutions to the economic and energy crisis, reducing our dependence on foreign oil, no new coal plants, and no off-shore or Artic oil drilling or destruction of our environment. Calling for real change that will benefit all of us, not just the rich or powerful. Saying no to Big Oil and the old way of doing things which got us into this mess in the first place. Imagine clean air, safe drinking water, and the ocean full of fishes instead of plastic trash. Imagine people living in peace and harmony with each other and the environment.
